When do you need to take a CBT course?
Any learners who are looking to ride their motorbikes or mopeds on public roads need to undertake a CBT course before they are able to ride unaccompanied. Only those who are riding an up to 50cc moped and passed their car driving test before 1.02.2001 are able to ride their moped without a CBT certificate.
Can I fail the CBT course?
As your CBT is a training day rather than a traditional test, it is difficult to fail on the day. If, however, your instructors feel you could benefit from some further training, you will be asked to come back to learn with them, instructors. This generally happens if you have not met the required standards set by the DVLA, and an extra charge will be incurred.
What do I need to take to my CBT course?
On the day of your CBT course, we will require all your documents, including your provisional license and confirmation of your booking, including all the riding equipment you will need for the CBT course. Upon arrival, your documents and equipment will be checked to ensure they are suitable for the course.
What motorbike can I ride after I pass my CBT course?
Once you have passed your CBT course, if you are 16, you will be eligible to ride a 50cc motorbike that is restricted to 28mph. For those who are aged 17 and above, you will be able to ride a 125cc motorbike. Please note that you will not be able to ride on motorways, and you will not be able to have a passenger until you have passed your full motorbike test.
Do I have to complete an eye test before I join the CBT course?
On the day of your CBT course, before you begin, we will ask you to complete a simple eyesight test to ensure you are comfortable seeing at a distance of 20.5 metres. If you wear glasses regularly, we recommend having a full eye test to understand whether you will need to wear glasses when riding your motorbike or moped. You will need to declare this to the DVLA upon applying for your provisional license.
Will I need to complete my theory test first?
The short answer is no. You will not need to complete a full theory test before you undertake your CBT course however we recommend having a good understanding of the highway code before you join the course, as you will be asked questions during your course. You will need to have a successfully completed theory test before you undertake your full motorbike license.
How hard is it to pass a CBT test?
As previously mentioned, your CBT course is across a full day’s training, so it’s not simply a case of ‘pass or fail’. During the course, your instructor will pay close attention to your understanding, ability to learn and the knowledge you pick up on the day. If your instructor believes you haven’t attempted to learn or pay attention during your course, they may be able to refuse the issue of your certificate and ask you to come back for further training.
At AVSCO, we recommend turning up on the day with the right attitude, the ability to listen and understand the key skills your instructor will impart and, most importantly, showing an aptitude for staying safe whilst out on the road, so you are not considered a danger to yourself and other road users.
At what age can I take a CBT test?
If you cannot wait to take your CBT course, you will be eligible to apply for a provisional license 3 months before your 16th birthday. Once you reach 16, you will be able to take the CBT course.
How long will my CBT license last?
Once you have passed your CBT course, your certificate will last for 2 years from the date of your passing. As you will not be sent a reminder to renew your CBT certificate, we recommend you make note of the date and set a reminder! During your 2 years, you will need to complete a full Moped or motorbike test before your CBT runs out. If you are unable to do this, you will need to retake your CBT course and obtain a new certificate.
