Protecting your motorcycle during the winter months

Often, there is nothing better than jumping on your motorcycle during a frosty morning, but the steps you will need to take to protect your motorbike and yourself during the winter months will differ from the summer. This month, AVSCO takes a look at what accessories to add to your motorbike and what clothing will keep you warm, but also how to protect your motorbike from the dirt and rust that winter brings.

There are several things you can do to keep your motorcycle safe and protected during the winter months. We recommend completing the following before and after each ride out:

  • Protect and lubricate your motorcycle chain
  • Check your tyres for debris and tread levels
  • Clean your motorbike
  • Charge your battery

Keeping your motorbike clean after each use will prevent dirt and rust from building up. Lubricating your motorbike chain regularly will stop the moisture from clinging on and freezing up your bike overnight. During the winter, your battery is likely to lose power more quickly, so it’s important to ride it regularly or use a charger to keep your bike charged. Lastly, your tyres are incredibly important and keeping them clear of dirt and ensuring the tread is good will help protect you on the road.

Accessories to keep you warm on your motorcycle

Before we get to clothing that will keep you warm, it’s worth looking at a few small modifications that you can make to your bike to help protect yourself against cold weather conditions. A big part of staying warm while cycling is limiting the effects of wind chill, the perception of decreased air temperature caused by the movement of air. Luckily, there are some accessories you can add to your motorcycle that will help to keep you warm whilst you are riding this winter.

Heated bike grips

Whilst it does seem like a bit of a luxury, heated grips are great for winter rides. If your bike doesn’t come with them as a standard, you will need to remove your current grips to install the new ones. Heated grips use the power from your bike battery to keep your hands warm whilst you are out and about.

Protect your hands

Use hand guards to protect your hands from the worst of the winter wind this year. If your motorcycle doesn’t have handguards already installed, we recommend getting some. Alongside heated grips, hand guards will keep your hands warm and protected from the wind.

Heated seats

Some bikers may laugh at your suggestion of heated seats, but they are great not only for keeping your bum warm but for warming your core body temperature as well. If you want the warmth without the cost, however, a sheepskin seat will do a similar job.

Motorcycle clothing to avoid the winter winds

There are many ways to limit the impact of wind chill, including wearing layers, covering up exposed skin, and choosing a route that takes you away from the prevailing winds. But there are some simple things you can do to minimise the negative effects of wind chill without spending much money.

The first thing you want to do is cover your head and face. This includes scarves, hats, goggles, and anything else that covers your ears, nose, eyes, mouth, and chin. You don’t necessarily need something fancy, just something that keeps the elements off your body. If you’re wearing a helmet, consider adding ear protection.

Next, look for clothing that wicks moisture away from your skin. Cotton is good, but synthetic materials like polyester will work better. Look for fabrics that allow air to move freely around your body. Avoid tight-fitting clothing, especially in places where the fabric touches your skin. Loose-fitting clothes allow the air to circulate around your body.

Finally, try to ride in the direction of the wind. Riding into the wind helps push the air over your body, reducing the effect of wind chill. When possible, avoid riding directly into the wind. Instead, find a path that allows you to take advantage of the breeze.
